California Passes 56 Bills on Housing Reform to Combat Affordability Crisis

Aimed at addressing the nation’s most severe housing crisis, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed 56 housing bills designed to aggressively pursue greater affordability. The bills’ aim to protect tenants, streamline cities’ housing approval processes, and rezone land to allow for greater densities. Bills like SB4 will unlock 1.71 million acres of developable land, while others like AB1033 will permit the construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs). These new measures build upon a series of housing bills passed in 2019, all designed to quickly boost the housing supply.
