Location Affordability Index. (2013). U.S. Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Transportation, with the Central for Neighborhood Technology

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the US Department of Transportation recently launched the Location Affordability Portal, a web-based tool that estimates the cost of housing and transportation based on location.

These necessities represent the two largest costs incurred by families. The average American family spends more than half of its income on just these two expenses.  Developed with the assistance of the Center for Neighborhood Technology, the Location Affordability Portal is a user-friendly source of information on combined housing and transportation costs that can help families, real estate professionals, housing counselors, policymakers, and developers make more informed decisions about where to live, work, and invest.

2018 Update: The Location Affordability Portal is no longer supported by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the US Department of Transportation.
