The Radical Solution to Ireland’s Housing Crisis

Ireland is grappling with a severe housing crisis, exacerbated by one of the fastest-growing populations in Europe. With a housing need of 50,000 to 62,000 new units annually until 2050, only about 29,000 units are expected to be built this year. This development gap affects younger generations and first-time home buyers the most, many of whom rely on staying with family. The national government sees transit-oriented development (TOD) as a potential solution. This approach involves creating high-density, mixed-use developments near existing transit stops, which can streamline development, minimize urban sprawl, and create economically vibrant and environmentally friendly communities. Successful models, such as Tokyo’s TOD initiatives, serve as inspiration.
