Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced that he will redirect $153 million in federal highway money to SEPTA in order to temporarily fix the transit agency’s budget shortfall. Originally granted to PennDOT for seven yet-to-be-started highway projects, funds will instead allow SEPTA to reverse its planned 21.5 percent rate hike and 21 percent service cut that would have gone into effect on January 1, 2025. However, state lawmakers failed to pass measures securing long-term SEPTA funding, meaning the budget shortfall issue will resurface during the next fiscal year.
