Emerging European-style Planning in the USA: Transit-Oriented Development. (2004). Renne, John L. and Jan S. Wells. World Transport Policy & Practice 10.2: 12-24.
This journal article argues that the New Jersey Transit Village Initiative is an example of a new role for state planning in the United States. The Initiative’s goal is to concentrate dense, pedestrian-oriented development around transit stations, an effort that is not typically American and more closely resembles the state-centric planning model often found in Europe. The authors evaluate the Initiative and conclude that is is a good model for smart growth.
