BAYONNE—Construction Underway on Bayonne’s First Affordable Housing in 40 Years 
Chris Fry, Jersey Digs | February 27, 2026 
The Bayonne Housing Authority broke ground on its first fully affordable housing development in 40 years. The project will include 40 affordable units, with half reserved for seniors and the remainder for persons with disabilities. The site sits within a five-minute walk of the 8th Street Station on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.

NEWARK—Newark Grants New Approvals to Four-Tower Ironbound Iberia Development 
Chris Fry, Jersey Digs | February 26, 2026 
The Newark Planning Board again approved Iberia II, a four-tower development with 1,408 units—including 285 affordable—and 18,000 sq. ft. of ground-floor retail near Newark Penn Station. Although the Board originally approved the project in March 2025, a summer lawsuit sent it back for reconsideration.

U.S. Supreme Court Denies N.J. Towns Affordable Housing Appeal

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito denied an appeal from several New Jersey municipalities seeking to delay the state’s affordable housing obligation deadline. The coalition must now join the 380 municipalities that have adopted affordable housing plans or risk losing immunity from builder’s remedy lawsuits.

JERSEY CITY—Jersey City Approves 490-Unit Development on Giles Avenue 
Chris Fry, Jersey Digs | February 19, 2026 
The Jersey City Planning Board approved a mixed-use building with 490 residential units—including 49 affordable—6,348 sq. ft. of ground-floor retail, and 250 bicycle parking spaces. As part of the approval, the developer has agreed to partially fund renovations to the Van Wagenen Avenue PATH Pedestrian Bridge.

COLORADO—State Awards Grants to Push Dense Developments Near Transit Centers 
Bente Birkeland, Colorado Public Radio | February 26, 2026 
Colorado awarded $13.3 million in grants to advance dense development near transit stations statewide. Funded projects include pedestrian bridges, a new 300-unit transit hub, and roadways and pedestrian infrastructure improvements.

NEW YORK—Mamdani Pitched Trump on Building Massive Housing Development in Sunnyside, Queens

Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with Donald Trump to discuss building 12,000 affordable homes, along with offices and public space, in Sunnyside, Queens. The proposal would require $21 billion in federal funding to construct a platform over the railyard and reconnect a long-divided area of Queens. Plans may also include the long-proposed Sunnyside Station with Metro-North and LIRR service.

MICHIGAN—Whitmer’s State of the State Will Include Affordable Housing Tax Credit 
Rick Pluta, Michigan Public | February 24, 2026 
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced plans to create an affordable housing tax credit to spur low-income housing construction. She also supports streamlining zoning rules to enable more construction but will likely face opposition from local zoning boards.

NEW YORK—Confluence Court Transforms Historic Downtown Building Into 11 Affordable Apartments 
Press Release, State of New York | February 19, 2026 
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion of Confluence Court, a 111-unit affordable housing development in downtown Binghamton. The project includes on-site services for homeless veterans and sits near transit, grocery stores, and employment opportunities.

KANSAS—Kansas City is Again Expanding Its Once-Mocked Streetcar 
Michael Boyle, Streetsblog USA | February 25, 2026 
The Kansas City Streetcar Authority announced plans for a new east-west line that will intersect Main Street’s existing 5.7-mile north-south route. The expansion would improve transfers to the north-south bus corridor and better connect the city’s east and west sides.

TEXAS—Light Rail Moves Forward in Austin, Texas 
Dan Zukowski, Smart Cities Dive | February 24, 2026 
The Austin Transit Partnership selected Austin Rail Constructors to begin pre-construction activities on its first light rail line. The 10-mile line will include 15 stations and connect the University of Texas to downtown. Construction is expected to start in 2027, with completion targeted for 2033.

INDIANA—Indiana’s First TOD Transforming Downtown Michigan City 
Ron Stang, Construct Connect | February 24, 2026 
Indiana’s first purpose-built TOD in Michigan City is nearing completion and will add 220 apartments and more than 5,600 sq. ft. It marks the first in a wave of projects totaling more than 2,000 units. Local officials credit the South Shore commuter rail upgrades, which will cut travel time to Chicago from two hours to one.

Transit-Oriented Housing on Track for Continued Growth

Transit-oriented housing continues to grow in urban and suburban markets. Although TOD occupies just one percent of city land, it accounts for 20 percent of regional job growth. Projects are advancing in New Jersey, New York, Chicago, and beyond.

VIETNAM—A Goal of 110,000 Social Housing Units Set for 2026 
Anh Khoa, VnEconomy | February 27, 2026 
The Ministry of Construction has launched an action program to implement Government Resolution No. 1, with a target of completing more than 110,000 new social housing units in 2026. The program also promotes green transportation, advances transit-oriented development, and seeks to stabilize the real estate market in support of sustainable growth.

ROMANIA—Metrorex Plans Expansion of Subway Network in Western Bucharest 
Radu Dumitrescu, Romanian Insider | February 25, 2026 
Bucharest announced plans for a 12-mile underground extension to its Metrorex subway system with eight new stations. The project will connect two densely populated residential neighborhoods to the existing M3 Line as construction advances on the M6 line linking the system to Henri Coandă Airport.

TAIWAN—Construction Starts on New Taipei’s Keelung Line 
Staff, Railway Gazette International, February 24, 2026 
Construction has begun on New Taipei’s 10-mile Keelung MRT light metro line, which will connect Nangang high-speed rail station to the Badu neighborhood in Keelung. The line will include 13 stops and is scheduled to open in 2033.
