2024 Transit Equity Day

Transit Equity Day, February 4th, is dedicated to promoting fair access to public transportation, emphasizing its critical role in improving social outcomes for marginalized communities. It honors the birthday of civil rights icon, Rosa Parks. Beyond demonstrating her rights, Ms. Parks raised awareness of public transportation as a service that enables people to travel to work, school, doctor’s appointments, recreation, and for meeting their basic needs. Denise W. Barreto, Chief Equity and Engagement Officer at the Chicago Transit Authority observes the day by highlighting the urgent need for public advocacy to address significant transit funding challenges. Barreto encourages users and advocates to engage all levels of government to promote transit equity. This annual commemoration underscores the importance of ensuring that everyone has access to reliable and safe transit options.
