In this introduction to Planetizens’ Roadways for People online course, Elizabeth Doerr explores the racist tactics and movements in American urban planning that resulted in a loss of housing and wealth for Black and brown communities. While Doerr focuses on Portland, Oregon, the construction of I-5, and the destruction of the Albina neighborhood, she outlines the history of redlining, urban renewal, and gentrification that continues to affect the U.S. overall. Finally, she proposes inclusive community-based approaches to planning as solutions for restoring and reconnecting historically Black neighborhoods destroyed during urban renewal.
