Dan Zukowski, Smart Cities Dive, July 15 2024
Transportation accounts for 33 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, with light-duty vehicles, trucks, and buses being major contributors. The USDOT released a report outlining measures to cut emissions in half by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050, aligning with the Biden administration’s decarbonization blueprint and U.N. Paris Agreement commitments. Strategies include reducing travel distances, promoting energy-efficient travel modes, and transitioning to zero-emission vehicles through transit-friendly land use, public transit and rail investment, higher fuel economy standards, and a national network of electric vehicle charging stations. However, a Texas court struck down a 2023 USDOT rule mandating CO2 emissions reduction targets, citing a lack of Congressional authority. rule that ordered state DOTs and MPOs to establish emission reduction targets, finding that the USDOT did not have Congressional authority.
