LCRT: Transit-Oriented Development Explained

The Charleston region is embracing the potential of the Lowcountry Rapid Transit (LCRT) system to promote transit oriented development (TOD)  while addressing the affordable housing crisis. The LCRT project, which will create a bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor from Somerville to Charleston, aims to build culturally-rich, walkable communities around transit stations. With expectations for the region’s population to rise to one million residents by 2030, regional officials hope to tackle issues like gentrification and displacement, as the development boom continues.
