Transit-Oriented Development | Park Central

The City of Phoenix’s Planning and Development Department’s Joelle Carrasco discusses the Park Central Mall and its transformation due to light rail investment on Central Avenue. Once an auto-centric shopping destination, the area now prioritizes walkability, biking, and transit access and features mixed-use infill development, bioswales, and pedestrian-friendly pathways or “paseos” that connect to the light rail. Midtown is one of five original transit-oriented development (TOD) districts in Phoenix. Additional TOD districts include those in the 19North area and in the South Central region of the city. The City also anticipates TOD planning for the Capital region, along the I-10 West extension of the existing Valley Metro Rail system, and for the area near the Metrocenter Mall.
